Rotary Club of Cheltenham Sunrise

CHELTENHAM INDIA

Over the Christmas period 2004 the Tsunami hit the coastal towns along the pacific coast resulting in perhaps the most devastating damage the present world has ever seen

Recently the club was presented with a special citation.

The picture shows Martin Greaves ADG presenting the Citation to Sandra Davis
Sandra accepted the citation on the club's behalf as Sandra was one of the prime movers
in getting the fund raising started, from her Lingerie shop in Montpellier she launched the first of many raffles

Sunrise understood that the Rotary capability to deliver meaningful aid in India post tsunami, was in excess of our normal fund raising capacity. The mayor Rob Garnham was happy to lead an appeal which was aimed at all of Cheltenham.

Many Organisations took part with Nursing Homes and Schools all contributing money: All four Cheltenham Rotary Clubs assisted and Broughtons the Aston Martin and Bentley Dealer hosted a Charity event which raised money for 30 houses.

Below are some before and after pictures

The houses have a dedicated plaque representing the donations made by the people of that particular area of Cheltenham England

We allocated some of the money raised to buy fishing boats for the Villagers, while other money helped to build schools

Delivery of the 80 (approx) houses took time but Cheltenham India can now be visited.
The Gunther Rotary Clubs which delivered the work in India had to negotiate the acquisition of land , subsidies from state
Government and appropriate legal allocation of the houses. The easy bit was collecting the money in Cheltenham and
we thank the people of Cheltenham for their generosity
